Meet the Team

Advanced Molecular Systems (AMS) is a spin-out of the Molecular Diagnostics Research Group at the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUI Galway) and has been in operation since 2012.

The founders of the company are Terry Smith, Louise O’Connor, and Barry Glynn. Between them, they bring together considerable expertise and experience in molecular diagnostics, having worked with both Irish and multinational industry partners to deliver successful test design and development outcomes for over 20 years.

The core business of Advanced Molecular Systems is the provision of Business 2 Business services in molecular diagnostic test design and R&D. In addition to its R&D services, the company also has an in-house R&D programme in molecular test R&D.

ASM group

Outsourcing molecular test design, research and development offers significant advantages to customers and enables them to reduce the significant costs involved in test development for the molecular diagnostics market. AMS offers flexible customer-focused, results oriented R&D services, delivering quality, feasibility-phase diagnostic tests.

Terry Smith
Terry is a co-founder and director of AMS. With over twenty years experience in the molecular diagnostics field, he is co-inventor on six patent families, comprising 50 granted and filed patents, related to six novel nucleic acid diagnostic technologies. These have been either commercialised, are in commercial development, or are currently part of collaborative research programmes with industry partners.

Louise O’Connor
Louise is a co-founder and director of Advanced Molecular Systems. Her primary role involves initial client interaction to establish their requirements, development of project programmes and the direction of scientists in executing technical programmes. Louise has been involved, at both the technical and management levels, in several collaborative research programmes with global diagnostics companies. She is a named inventor on seven nucleic acid diagnostic technologies and previously worked in R&D with Olympus Ireland.

Barry Glynn
Barry is co-founder and director of Advanced Molecular Systems and is responsible for financial operations within the company. Barry has over 15 years professional experience in molecular diagnostics research. He was previously responsible for the nucleic acid based platform development programme at MDRG, which sought to integrate research outputs from the group onto the next generation of diagnostics systems and biosensors.

Sinéad Lahiff

Sinéad is Senior Laboratory Specialist with AMS and has extensive experience in molecular diagnostic test development. She is a named inventor on five patented technologies. Her role involves the development of novel NADs tailored to specific customer requirements.
